Shepherds Purse: Genre Catalog -- Adoration

Return to main page

Adoration scenes are somewhat less common than Annunciation scenes, but still very common. The Adoration of the Shepherds may be combined with the Adoration of the Magi, and one group may be more predominent than the other, or one may be depicted as arriving or leaving while the other is featured. I don't know whether the difference in numbers of Adoration vs. Annunciation scenes with shepherds reflects actual presence in the manuscripts, or whether books on art are more likely, for some reason, to include the one rather than the other.
