The gender of the person who wore the garments may be determined by an associated burial, by the style of the garment, or by traditional assignment. Even these criteria are fallible. For example, some of the garments from Herjolfsnes in Greenland seem to have been used simply as shrouds without regard for matching the gender of the deceased and the garment. In other cases, a garment may be traditionally but falsely associated with a particular saint, lessening the value of the association for identifying gender. In some cases, there are additional notes on the basis for assigning a garment's gender. Approximately half the garment records have a specific gender assigned, but there are widely varying levels of confidence for these assignments.
