Enter a number for a starting year and ending year for your search. (Use negative numbers for years falling before the Common Era.) All database records have a date number assigned for use in this search but in many cases it's an arbitrary and approximate date. If descriptions assign a garment to a general period (e.g., "14th century" or "2nd quarter of the 15th century") the arbitrary search date will be the beginning of that period (e.g., "1300" or "1425"). In many cases, a more specific date for deposit can be assigned (e.g., death date for grave finds, dendrochronological date for garments associated with wooden items). It's a good idea to add a 10-20% "cushion" to the edges of your desired search period, not only because garments falling slightly before or after may provide useful information, but because of this lack of precision in the date field itself.
