The source is a Franco-Flemish manuscript of ca. 1475-81, currently located at the Victoria and Albert Museum (Salting Collection no. 1221). The work is known as the Simon Marmion Hours and the scene is a genre illustration of the Annunciation to the Shepherds. There are three shepherds in the scene, only two of which wear Shepherds Purses. In both cases, the pouches have a flap with a scalloped edge, fastened with a cord tie.
